N.M. Bachtel Forging Co. – Brand Video
Our Mission
To capture video showcasing hand forged knives made by blacksmith Nick Bachtel. With most knives being stamped out in a large factory we wanted to highlight the hands on nature of hand forging using a coal fire.
Film Day
We traveled down to northern Ohio where N.M. Bachtel Forging Co. is located. The set up was mostly natural light and ambient light from the space to add to the realism of the footage. This made it feel like more like a documentary and less like an advertisement. The shot list was designed to capture the process and how intensive it is to make a knife. In the end we had several hours worth of amazing footage to work with in post.
The Edit
In the edit we chose a mostly chronological order to showcase the process. We wanted a strong hook to engage people in viewing the video but also wanted it to progress in a way someone could easily follow.
The color grade was chosen to reflect a depth and visual intrigue without being overly stylized. Being shot on a high resolution cinema camera we had a ton of flexibility in the process to make a consistent look that fit our vision.
We used on site recording as well as sound effects to enhance the impacts and the overall feeling on the video. Because the footage is in slow motion we had to balance the audible cues and the video so it felt cohesive. The audio really supports the great footage of the video.
